Indiana's state income tax rate is a flat rate of 3.3% for all residents. This is lower than the national average. The state's tax revenue is more than $15 billion, which is close to the nation's median range. All residents, partial-year residents and nonresidents who earned income within the state are required to file an individual income tax return for the applicable year. Residents must use Form IT-40, and nonresidents and partial-year residents must use Form IT-40PNR.
Indiana Tax Deadlines
Individual income tax forms must be filed by April 15. If a taxpayer requires a tax extension, it must also be filed by this date to avoid penalties. To file an Indiana tax extension, visit http://www.in.gov/dor/4736.htm. Click on the link for Form IT-9. Mail the completed IT-9 to Indiana Department of Revenue at:

Amended Returns
When an error is discovered on an Indiana tax return that was already sent and accepted, taxpayers must file an amended return. To do this, use Form IT-40X from the Department of Revenue's site. After completing the form, mail it with any required payment to:

Tracking A Tax Return Or Indiana Tax Refund
To check the status of an Indiana tax refund, go to https://secure.in.gov/apps/dor/tax/refund/. Refund status is also available over the phone by calling 317-233-4018. Estimated Payments
Taxpayers who are self-employed or do not have enough taxes taken from their checks may be required to pay estimated taxes. Use Form IT-40ES to determine estimated tax liability. Mail the completed vouchers that come with the form by their due dates to:

Late Filing And Nonpayment Penalties
If an Indiana tax return is filed after April 15 without at least 90% of the tax due paid, there is a penalty fee of 10% of the tax due. Taxpayers who do not file a return at all during that tax year incur a penalty fee of 20% of the tax due.
